The results of a study assessing the socioeconomic burden of posttraumatic long bone non-unions have been published
Dmitry G. Shchurov, the head of the Horizon Scanning Center at Sechenov University, participated in Maastricht University research on the assessment of the socioeconomic burden of posttraumatic long bone non-unions. The results were published in the European Journal of Traumatology and Emergency Surgery.

The study found that the first three months after a fracture in such patients cost the Dutch healthcare system nearly € 9,000, excluding the cost of subsequent highly specialized medical care. The quality of life of these patients is extremely poor due to limited mobility, the inability to self-care, and moderate to severe pain.

All this highlights the need for further steps in the organization of care, such as early diagnosis, improved patient routing based on nonunion risk and proper reimbursement.
